A message from the Principal

Dear Fairburn Avenue Families,

We are excited to welcome you to the 2025-2026 school year at Fairburn Avenue Elementary! Whether you are a returning family or new to our community, we look forward to a fantastic year filled with learning, friendship, and growth. Below, you will find important information about the first day of school, aftercare programming, and other details. We can’t wait to see you on August 14th for our first day of school!

New Student Orientation

Fairburn will host a Transitional Kindergarten (TK), Kindergarten, and New Student Orientation on August 13th at 1:30 PM in our beautiful auditorium. New students will have the opportunity to meet their teachers and enjoy a refreshing treat.

1st Day of School Information

Students in grades Kindergarten through 5th will line up for class on the playground from 7:40 to 8:00 AM. Families are welcome to stay in the yard, and teachers will meet students there. Once the teachers begin to depart for class, we kindly ask that adults exit the campus.

TK (Transitional Kindergarten) students will go directly to their classrooms at 8:00 AM to be welcomed by their teachers. Families may accompany their child, but we request that all parents exit after 15 minutes, by 8:15 AM.

All parents are invited to return for our early dismissal at 1:35 PM. The gates will open at this time, and we ask that you exit promptly by 1:50 PM.

Back to School Morning will take place on August 27 at 8:00 AM. Please save your

questions and requests for this event.

During our first two weeks, teachers will be administering beginning-of-the-year assessments to develop academic plans that meet the needs of all our students.

Drop Off:

- TK students must enter through the TK gate, located 20 feet west of the Fairburn and Ohio Avenue intersection. Students will enter the TK play area and be supervised by one of the TK Assistants until the teachers arrive.

- Kindergarten through 5th-grade students should enter through one of two gates. The carpool valet line is located at the lower Ohio Avenue Gate. Please have students’ backpacks, lunch pails, and jackets easily accessible in the front passenger seat and ensure that the passenger rear door can be opened for exiting the vehicle. If possible, please move all stationary car seats to the driver’s side.

- The Rochester entrance is designated for walking students only. We ask that students refrain from exiting cars on the Rochester Avenue side of the school.

- Students should not enter through the front of the school. Our Campus Aide will direct them to the Rochester or Ohio Avenue gates until 8:00 am.

Dismissal:

- TK dismissal is from the Ohio Avenue Upper gate. Students will remain on the TK playground and will be picked up by parents at the gate. Kindergarten students will be brought to the TK area for pickup, and those attending the afterschool program will be picked up by their providers.

- 1st through 5th-grade students will exit through either the lower Ohio gate or the Rochester gate from the yard. Older siblings may exit through the same gate as their younger siblings.

- Please be mindful of dismissal times. If a parent is late, students will be sent to Beyond the Bell, or, if they are in TK or 1st grade, they will wait in the office.

School Schedule:

- School begins at 8:00 am for all students. Students can line up on the playground starting at 7:40 am and wait for their teachers, who will lead them to class. We will continue to host morning exercise on Mondays and Fridays and welcome parents to participate.

- School dismissal is at 2:28 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and at 1:28 pm on Tuesdays only.

Fairburn does not provide a supply list but asks that students bring a labeled backpack, a labeled lunch pail, and a water bottle. There is a water filling station located across from the teachers' parking lot in the yard. Please try to label all personal items to help reduce the number of missing items.

After-School Programs:

We currently offer three after-school program options for our community, all of which take place on-site at our school.

  1. LAUSD Beyond the Bell Program: This program is FREE for students in grades 2 to 5. It operates daily from dismissal until 6 PM, with no cap on capacity and flexible pick-up times.

  1. STAR: This is a paid program that provides enrichment activities for students from Transitional Kindergarten (TK) to 5th grade. For more information, please visit their website at STARINC.org. The STAR program runs daily from dismissal until 6 PM.

  1. ELOP (Extended Learning Program): This FREE program offers homework assistance and additional curricular activities for students from TK to 5th grade. Please note that spaces in this program are limited at this time.

Meals

A snack will be offered every day for the first 15 minutes of the students' recess in the cafeteria. If a child follows a special diet, we encourage parents to send a snack with their child for recess. Lunch is also provided free of charge. The cafeteria staff will serve our children a carefully prepared and nutritious meal. All parents must complete an annual household income form each year, regardless of whether they want their child to eat school lunch. Please read and complete the application thoroughly. If children prefer, they may bring their snack and lunch from home. For more information, please see the DAILY MENUS. Children are discouraged from sharing food with classmates due to food allergies and dietary restrictions, so please discuss this rule with your child.
